It will only last the entire family abt........... 3 months+? Let's watch & see... [the ans is 6months!]
Mom has been reading a book on Barefoot Runnin' (Born to Run by Christopher McDougall). It's about an ancient running tribe of super athletes... they're able to run for 2 days straight WITHOUT any rest at all. They do 50 to 100miles of run for PURE enjoyment. They're the Tarahumara Tribe.
''A Tarahumara champion once ran 435 miles, the equivalent of setting our for a jog in New York City & not stopping till you were closing in on Detroit. Other Tarahumara runners reportedly went three hundred miles at a pop. That's nearly twelve full marathons, back to back to back, while the run rose and set and rose again.'' from the book, BORN TO RUN by Christopher McDougall
The Tarahumara diet is described in some small detail in the book, with repeated mention of two staples — pinole and chia seeds. The author relates a few stories that ascribe almost magical, endurance-enhancing qualities to these simple foods. ( http://www.nomeatathlete.com/tarahumara-pinole-chia-recipes/ )
It's for us as well as for our humans while they do their (barefoot or minimalism) marathons.
You may read more about Chia Seeds for dogs here (Taken from the website: For my dog Kuuma, I mix a good amount of chia seeds with raw eggs or raw meat and keep it refrigerated for 48 hours before feeding it to my dog to increase its nutritional content. When Chia seeds, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids are included in your dog's diet, your can expect to see your dog's overall health to improve with the energy of a puppy and its coat to become shiny and healthy. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients, deficient in most dogs' diets. Omega-3 fatty acids are fundamental molecules in the structure and activity of the membranes of all cells throughout your dog's body. They also have highly- specialized functions in neurological tissues, especially the brain and retina and play an important role in cell membranes and the formation of new tissue, therefore important for development and growth. You will love the ease of using Chia seeds and dogs love the nutty taste!)
The web site Chiaforhealth.com recommends giving chia seed or chia oil to the family pet for their health as well! For the health of cats and/or small dogs (under 25 pounds), SOAK 1/4 teaspoon a day and mix it with their food. For larger dogs soak 1 teaspoon per day and add to food. For big dogs soak 1 teaspoon twice daily and add to food.
* CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH ... Soaking makes chia seeds easier for the body to digest and release the high levels of good-for-you nutrients. If you are using seeds dry, BE CAREFUL of the quantity you sprinkle on food without soaking. Chia seeds absorb 27 times their volume in water, both outside and inside the body. When using dry chia seeds, it is recommended to use only a teaspoon at a time and make sure you (or your children and/or animals) are well hydrated.'' Credits
Besides soaking them to prevent dehydration in your dog, it's best to soak these seeds for 48 hours for maximum nutrients release. Keep them refrigerated while they're being soaked. The final optional step would be blending them up. Otherwise some dogs might pass the seeds out. A couple teaspoons of raw chia once soaked and expanded will last us two (5kg) dogs for about 5 days or so. There is little to worry about since chia seeds do not turn rancid as easily as flax seeds.
Organic stores have 2 kinds of Chia Seeds, Natural & Organic. As well as White & Black Chia Seeds.

When someone says “Chia”, what’s the first thing that pops into your mind? For millions, the answer is “Chia Pet!” Many probably have the “ch-ch-ch-CHIA” song rolling around in their heads right now. What many don’t know is that Chia has more uses than just “pets that grow”. Chia is incredibly nutritious and truly deserves the “superfood” label.
Chia, or Salvia Hispanica, is known today as the forgotten crop. Domesticated in 2.600 BC, chia is a flowering plant native to southern Mexico and Central America. It was cultivated by the Mayans and Aztecs and one of the main foods of their diet and was even used as trade currency. Aztec warriors and runners are said to have sustained themselves on just a tablespoon of chia seeds a day, providing them with abundant energy and endurance.
Because of the plant’s ability to increase stamina and energy over long periods, chia seeds were considered quite magical. Due to its superior nutritional value, chia became a holy seed among these ancient civilizations, used in religious ceremonies and offered to their gods.
Related to the mint plant family, there are two varieties, white chia and black chia. Chia oil is a component of many ointments due to its emollient properties. Each seed is potent enough to prevent infections, with 19-23% protein, which is gluten free, 34% oil and 25% fiber. Chia seeds offer an excellent source of B vitamins and they are loaded with important Omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and antioxidants.

You can get them from most organic shops. There's various brands available out here locally like eg MorLife, EPG, Organic Nutiva, Organic Goldmine etc (there's natural grade & organic grade). =]
Thank you so much! I will go and take a look next week! :D
Hi... Can I know where did you order your chia seed from? Mind to share which website or source and total cost incl shipping? Cos I search thru web and some ppl said the shipping costs is very high from some source. Thanks in advance :-D
I just found your page and it's great! I'm slowly trying to switch my dogs over to a healthier way of eating. The problem is I have 3 great danes and a red heeler. All are rescues. My youngest great dane is 3 1/2 years old and last year about this time we thought she got bit by a spider as there was a hole right by her butt. It ends us she is having anal glad issues. Basic meds didn't work, changing to a very high end holistic food didn't work and actually made it worse. On top of that, we found out she has allergies and sometimes she wants to eat, other times she turns a nose up and walks away. We've had Danes for 20 years now and never had problems with their original food. So here's the question, considering that I have to watch her/their porting/fat percentages since they are not XL breed working or sporting dogs, how do I figure out how much black chia seeds to give per serving or per day or per week? Trust me when I said I googled like crazy looking for answers and can't find any.
